Just like every other public place, gyms
have a set of unspoken social etiquettes that must be followed. But a majority of
people don’t seem to follow these rules. Either due to ignorance or inflated
egos, many people seem intent on not being considerate of others when it comes
to gym etiquettes.
If everyone followed these rules, the gym would be a much
better place for everyone involved. For any newcomers as well as seasoned gym
goers, the following gym etiquettes should be a prerequisite before venturing
off into the metal jungle.

Be Considerate
Being considerate of others is important.
Gym etiquettes follow a lot of the same social norms that other social settings
do. Whenever someone is working out surrounded by multiple weights or
dumbbells, it means they are using them. If you need to use any of those weights,
then ask them if they are using it first. Don’t just go and grab them for your
workout. After all, no one in their right mind would yank food off someone
else’s plate in a restaurant, right?
Put the Weights Back
Ah! The number one crime committed by people in gyms every day. There’s
a reason that designated places for weight plates and dumbbells exist in a gym.
Grabbing dumbbells and weights off the rack and not putting them back to their the right place is highly inconsiderate for the next person that requires them.
Remember that other people work out in the same gym.
Making them search for
weights throughout the gym isn’t a cool thing to do! While we are on the
subject, do not leave weights racked up on machines or barbells either. While
it may be impressive that someone can bench-press 200kgs, it’s highly
inconsiderate if the next person can’t lift the weights off of it.
The same principle extends to the equipment
as well. If a bench is required for performing shoulder presses using a squat
machine, make sure the bench is back to its original position after you’re done.
Use a Towel
A gym is a place for intense exercise. And intense
exercise equals sweat. This sweat has a high potential of transferring germs to
other people. See where we’re going with this? Every gym goer must have a towel
with them. A towel doesn’t only come in handy for wiping the sweat off one’s own
body, but it is also useful for wiping off the sweat that inevitably
accumulates on the equipment.
Use a Deodorant
No one likes to go around sniffing other
people’s bad body odour! The gym is no different. In fact, putting on deodorant
is even more essential for gyms. When working out, you’ll inevitably sweat. Since
there’s going to be a lot of people exercising in one place, there’s bound to
be some bad body odour all around. Putting on a deodorant mitigates this and
makes the gym a better place for everyone involved.
